About the podcast

Medicinal plants, their chemistry and the evidence

The Australian Institute of Pharmacognosy Podcast comes from the Australian Institute of Pharmacognosy, a not-for-profit, independent research institute in Cardwell, Queensland, dedicated to studying drugs of botanical origin.

Pharmacognosy is the study of medicines that come from natural sources, especially plants. The podcast looks at where medicinal plants grow, how they are identified, what compounds they contain, and what published research does and does not show about them.

Episodes are for education and general interest. They are not health advice for any individual.

Identification and quality

Why correct identification matters, and how adulteration and substitution are detected.

History of use

How medicinal plants have been recorded over time, and how historical sources are read alongside modern research.
