The Australian Institute of Pharmacognosy (ABN 80 473 856 173), Cardwell, Queensland, would like to make a copy of your voice.
You read a short paragraph aloud for about a minute. We keep that recording. Software then builds a synthetic model of your voice from it. This is called a voice clone. Once the model exists, the Institute can type any words at all and have them spoken in a voice that sounds like yours, saying things you never said.
Please read the whole of this page before you agree to it.
What we keep
Two things. The recording you made, and the voice model built from it. Your recording and voice model are held securely by the Institute and used only for the purposes set out in this form. Your name, your email, the date and this signed agreement are stored alongside them.
A recording of your voice is sensitive information about you under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), so we may only collect it if you agree. Saying no costs you nothing. Your work, your study or your standing with the Institute stays exactly as it is if you decline, and you do not have to give a reason.
What we use it for
The voice model is used to narrate the Institute’s own material: videos, podcast episodes, read-aloud audio of articles and monographs, and recordings made for use inside the Institute.
We may edit, shorten and mix that audio, and we may publish it under the Institute’s name.
Here is what we will not do with it.
- We will not sell it, licence it, hire it out or hand it to anyone outside the Institute.
- We will not use your voice to endorse a product, a treatment, a business or a person.
- We will not use your voice to say anything false, misleading or defamatory, and we will not present Institute words as your own opinion or your own clinical advice.
- We will not use your voice for anything outside the Institute’s work without coming back and asking you again.
How long we keep it
We keep the recording and the model while your voice is in the Institute’s narration roster. We will ask you to renew this permission every two years, because permission given years ago and never revisited stops meaning much.
If you leave the Institute, or the voice goes unused for twelve months, we delete the recording and the model.
We keep this signed agreement for seven years after that deletion, as our record that permission was given and when it ended.
Changing your mind
You can withdraw this permission whenever you like. Write to our contact form, or tell any department head and they will pass it on. You do not have to give a reason.
When you withdraw, we stop using your voice for new audio that day, and we delete the recording and the voice model within 30 days. We email you when it is done.
Audio we already published stays where it is unless you ask us to take it down. Ask, and we will remove what the Institute controls within a reasonable time. Copies that have already been downloaded, carried by a podcast directory or saved by a listener are past our reach, and we cannot promise to get them back. Withdrawing stops future use and does not unwind use that was permitted while this agreement stood.
Your rights over what we hold
You can ask to listen to the recording, ask for a copy of it, ask us to correct what we have recorded about you, and complain if you think we have mishandled it. Complaints come to our contact form first. If our answer does not satisfy you, you can take it to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. Our privacy policy sets out the rest of how we handle personal information.
